CEREC crowns are fully ceramic restorations crafted using advanced CEREC technology, which includes:
- An optical scanner
- Specialized computer software
- A milling unit
Instead of relying on a lab technician, the dentist handles the entire crown creation process, providing greater control. This approach is known as a “chairside” system.
Moreover, since the crown is made during the same visit, patients can receive their new restoration in just one appointment. This is a significant improvement over traditional crowns, which require a waiting period of 1-2 weeks.
Additionally, this method avoids the need for dental impressions, which can be uncomfortable and trigger the gag reflex. Instead, an intraoral camera scans the teeth, and the software generates a 3D model automatically.
Dentists can fine-tune the design before sending it to the milling unit for fabrication. Though it might seem time-consuming, the entire process typically takes about two hours.
What’s The Procedure For Getting A CEREC Dental Crown?
Upon arriving at the clinic, the dentist will administer local anesthesia to ensure a painless experience during tooth preparation. Once the tooth is ready, the crown is created through the following steps:
- Scanning: A handheld device with a camera captures an image of the tooth and surrounding area, which is then transmitted to the software.
- 3D Model Generation: A virtual impression is created using CAD technology, allowing the dentist to make any necessary adjustments.
- Milling: The final design is sent to the milling unit, which shapes a ceramic block into the crown within a vacuum using precision tools. The resulting restoration is polished and ready.
- Fitting: The dentist places the crown on your tooth to ensure a proper fit. Once confirmed, it is cemented into place.
Patients usually leave the clinic within about two hours with a new, permanent dental crown.
How Long Do CEREC Crowns Last?
CEREC crowns can last up to 10 years or longer with proper care. According to research published in Operative Dentistry, CEREC crowns have a success rate of approximately 94% after 5 years and 85% after 10 years.
